*** Adopting a Greyhound from GALT Central Texas (GALTCT) ***

*** NOTICE ***
GALT Central Texas is currently accepting applications for adoption. Based on the needs of the applicant and the greyhound (cat/small critter tolerant, only dog, special needs, etc.), the application process may take 6+ months. If you will be a new greyhound owner, the wait time will be longer. GALT Central Texas does not adopt to families who reside outside the state of Texas unless they are previous greyhound owners or currently have a resident greyhound. Prior to submitting an application, please send a note to adopt@galtx-centex.org and our adoption coordinator will schedule a time to talk with you.

Thank you for your interest in adopting a retired racing Greyhound. Greyhounds make wonderful companion pets and will give you many years of love and devotion. Adopting a Greyhound is a serious responsibility requiring a long-term commitment. This application has been designed to evaluate potential adopters to ensure that each person who adopts a Greyhound is not only aware of that responsibility, but also to address the suitability and permanence of each Greyhound placed in a home. We have worked in Greyhound adoption for many years and have seen many happy endings, and unfortunately we have also seen a few sad ones. We have only the best interest of the Greyhound in mind. Before signing this application, please know that Greyhounds can live 10 to 14 years, making this a serious, long-term commitment. It is very traumatic for a dog to be returned by its family once it has settled into its new home. Furthermore, note that the Greyhound is not for everyone. These dogs rely on us to place them into appropriate, loving, responsible homes. All adults in your household must agree to this adoption and sign the application. Please read this application carefully and consider the importance of your responses.

GALT Central Texas generally does not adopt to families with children the age of six and under unless they are previous greyhound owners or currently have a greyhound. GALT Central Texas will consider adopting to families with children the age of six and under on a case by case basis. Please email adopt@galtx-centex.org for details. GALT Central Texas recommends that families with children who are interested in adopting a Greyhound read the book, Childproofing Your Dog: Complete Guide to Preparing Your Dog for the Children by S. Brian/Wilson Kilcommons.

There is a non-refundable adoption fee of $750 + $0 tax (Domestic Greyhounds up through age 7) , $450 + $0 tax (Domestic Greyhounds age 8 and up) , $750 + $0 tax (Austrailian Greyhounds up through age 7) , $450 + $0 tax (Austrailian Greyhounds age 8 and up) , $750 + $0 tax (Irish Greyhounds up through age 7) , $450 + $0 tax (Irish Greyhounds age 8 and up) , $550 + $0 tax (Lurchers up through age 7) or $450 + $0 tax (Lurchers age 8 and up) . A $75 deposit is required with submission of an adoption application ($50 of which is refundable and $25 of which is non-refundable). For foster applications only, the deposit is not required. The deposit should be made HERE and please make note of your confirmation number to enter into the application. The remaining adoption fee is due when the Greyhound is adopted. The adoption fee includes:
  • Neuter/spay
  • All vaccinations (DHLPP, Bordetella & Rabies)
  • A CBC (complete blood count) with serum chemistry panel (Seniors only)
  • Heartworm test with negative test result

Foster Section

*** Fostering a Greyhound from GALT Central Texas (GALTCT) ***

MORE retiring and rescued greyhounds are on their way to us and are in need of a soft place to land. If you have considered fostering, NOW is the time to make a difference in a greyhound's life. Please complete the foster application below.

GALT Central Texas ALWAYS needs caring foster homes (with and without cats!). GALT Central Texas provides the basic supplies; you provide lessons on home life, bed, safety, warmth, affection, and training for becoming someone's forever companion. Tomlinson's has generously donated food for our foster families, so now there is no monetary cost for dog food when fostering.

Greyhounds are very intelligent and learn quickly, particularly when given daily affection. During the time they are in foster care, the greyhounds are taken to the veterinarian, get their annual shots, are spayed or neutered, have their teeth cleaned, are tested for heartworms and put on heartworm preventative. During their visit, they are also evaluated for any injuries or health problems. Once this is done, GALT Central Texas begins the process of finding a home for the greyhound, and the foster family plays a big role in ensuring the right placement of the greyhound.

Foster families are our most important volunteers. Without foster families, GALT Central Texas cannot fulfill its mission. The main limitation on the number of dogs GALT Central Texas can bring into its adoption program is the number of volunteer foster families. If you would like to volunteer to foster a newly retired racing greyhound, please complete the application below.

For foster applications only, the deposit is not required.
